Pasma told authorities he and Kristen had been arguing earlier that day. Watch More 'Dateline' Episodes In Our Free App ![]() “My first impressions were that he knew exactly what happened,” Myers said, adding that his over-the-top concern for Kristen seemed like a “really poor acting job.” Investigators reached out to Pasma the same night Kristen had been found on the roadway, but Myers wasn’t reassured by what he had to say. She told her mother she needed to break up with “that dude” and told her she “hated” him. ![]() Kristen’s memory was blocked and her affection for Pasma seemed to have vanished right along with it. ![]() In the weeks after Kristen was discovered bruised and bleeding on the road, she began to slowly regain consciousness, but the 23-year-old had no memory of what happened that mysterious night. Her mother, Pat, said Pasma “pretty much blew up” at her family after her parents had tried to stop him from driving after an afternoon of drinking.ĭespite the concerns of those around her, Kristen moved in with Pasma in the spring of 2009 to a house just off campus. Her dad, Rick, described how Pasma seemingly avoided him during a visit for dad’s weekend and her sister Shannon recalled a time Kristen had called her in tears because Pasma had locked her out of his house and forced her to walk all the way back to her apartment. Kristen’s friends said once the romance began, Kristen had started to pull away from friends she’d had for years, isolating herself with Pasma, who they described as controlling and possessive. “They were attached at the hip from the very beginning,” one friend told “Dateline: Secrets Uncovered.” “She wanted to marry him and have kids with him and they started planning their future.”īut not everyone saw Pasma’s appeal. Kristen and Pasma had met her senior year of college and quickly became smitten with one another. The 23-year-old - who friends described as upbeat, friendly, positive, and charismatic - had recently graduated from college and was living with her boyfriend, Richard Pasma. “Real simply put, we knew that somebody else knew about what happened,” Myers said.īefore she was discovered, Kristen seemingly had everything going for her. ![]() She had road rash on her body and investigators found a long trail of blood on the asphalt where she had been found, but no car, leading authorities to believe she may have fallen or been pushed from a vehicle. Kristen had been left in a coma, still struggling to survive from serious bruising on her brain. I mean, Kristen’s a very beautiful girl and then to see her, you know, her hair all cut and matted with blood, you know, just seeing your own child go through what that pain must have been like was just, is just impossible for us to take,” Rick said. When they reached Spokane, they were ushered into an intensive care unit where they found their once-vivacious daughter unconscious and hooked up to a series of tubes and monitors. “I just remember praying like I’ve never prayed before in my life, you know, ‘Hang on, Kristen we’re coming, hang on,’” Rick recalled. “All we know is that we have an injured female in the middle of the road and we have very little evidence.”Īs Kristen was being rushed to a nearby hospital and then airlifted to Spokane, her parents, Pat and Rick Grindley, were trying to come to grips with the news that their daughter had been gravely injured. “We didn’t know if it’s an attempted murder or if it’s just a bad accident,” Whitman County Sheriff Brett Myers said of the perplexing scene.

The servers can be based in different locations and provide all data multiple times, thereby providing a redundant system. A redundant designed multiserver system can include up to 16 servers in one cluster. ![]() The base of the VSM control system consists of one or multiple routers, for increased redundancy. The TCP/IP structure also allows remote access to the system. If the latter only features serial ports, CommServers must be used to translate from RS-422 or RS-232 to TCP/IP. Devices to be controlled are connected to the IP backbone, while third party devices are connected to the VSM via TCP/IP or RS-422/RS-232. This means that the VSM is designed as an “Island Solution” but can also be smoothly integrated into an existing network. This makes the Virtual Studio Manager the most flexible control solution to satisfy constantly evolving production demands. Most importantly, the VSM offers a unique feature: when running together with the vsmPanel application, the control system provides numerous, freely configurable software front-ends for all users and applications. Additionally, the VSM control system offers functions, such as Tally, GPI, and Tie-Line Management as well as global labels of connected devices without requiring additional control systems. The VSM controls routers and their integrated DSP functions, multiviewers, video mixers, audio consoles and modular equipment as well as any third-party devices. ![]() ![]() Having become the standard for OB-Vans, VSM has also proven itself to be a reliable partner for control functions in radio and TV studios, and master control rooms, around the globe. During the last few years, this vision has grown into one of today’s most powerful and cost-efficient universal control systems for broadcast applications. Thus, components such as a video switcher or router can be interchanged at any time, without impacting upon the end-user operation. The basic concept of Lawo's Virtual Studio Manager (VSM) is to control all production devices, their parameters and functionalities from a single, freely-configurable user interface which remains independent of the manufacturer. ![]() Silverback delivers services like web design, content, social media, editorial SEO, and more. ![]() All patients with bilateral tonic pupils should be considered for serologic testing for syphilis. It is important to check patient history for diabetes mellitus, trauma, and other neurologic diseases. Additionally, the pupils will demonstrate poor dilation after mydriatic eyedrop administration. Slit lamp examination often shows portions iris atrophy along with transillumination defects. Over time, AR pupils eventually lose their near constriction as well and become miotic and immobile. This light-near dissociation is bilateral in 80-90% of patients, but both pupillary size and degree of light-near dissociation can be asymmetric. However, there is brisk pupillary constriction for accommodation to near targets and brisk redilation after the near reaction, which distinguishes AR pupils from Adie tonic pupils. The pupils also demonstrate minimal or complete absence of pupillary constriction to light stimulation. Upon close examination, the pupils have an irregular shape (oval, egg-shaped, tear shaped, irregularly polygonal, serrated, or eccentric). ![]() Patients with AR pupils typically present with miotic pupils (<2mm in diameter) that do not dilate fully in dim light. ![]() CausesĪlthough AR pupils are classically associated with neurosyphilis, other AR like pupils can occur in the setting of diabetes mellitus, neurosarcoidosis, chronic alcoholism, encephalitis, multiple sclerosis, Lyme disease, or herpes zoster. During this period, the pupillary light reactions progress from slow, incomplete constrictions to complete loss of the light reflex. The damaging lesion in AR pupils usually develops over a period of time, sometimes asymmetrically and sometimes at an uneven rate. When this inhibitory pathway is disrupted, parasympathetic neurons of the Edinger-Westphal nucleus that naturally fire at a high rate can lead to sustained pupil contraction by the iris sphincter and cause miosis in AR pupils. Supranuclear adrenergic fibers that inhibit the Edinger-Westphal nucleus are necessary for iris sphincter relaxation and pupil dilation. However, the more ventrally located fibers of the Edinger-Westphal nuclei that control the near reaction are spared. Specifically, a lesion of the dorsal aspect of the Edinger-Westphal nucleus can interrupt the pretectal oculomotor light reflex fibers. Bilateral tonic pupils are more frequently to be encountered than AR pupils in the modern era.ĭamage to the rostral midbrain can result in AR pupils. As the prevalence of syphilis has decreased to 2.1 per 100,000 population in the year 2000, the percentage of non-syphilitic AR pupil findings have increased. However, with the efficacy of penicillin therapy, the incidence of tertiary syphilis has decreased, and AR pupils have become quite rare in the United States. EpidemiologyĪR pupils were originally described with neurosyphilis and the finding became a characteristic clinical sign for the disease. Douglas Moray Cooper Lamb Argyll Robertson, a Scottish ophthalmologist and surgeon, originally described this abnormal pupil finding in 1868. In addition, AR pupils are accompanied with frequent iris atrophy. The characteristic light-near dissociation of AR pupils occurs most often bilaterally but may be unilateral in some patients. The pupils are noticeably able to accommodate to near targets, with subsequent normal and brisk redilation to far. The affected pupils initially appear small, and are irregular, but as opposed to the tonic pupil do not maintain increased tone to near targets. Argyll Robertson (AR) pupils, are characterized by small and irregular pupils that have little to no constriction to light but constricts briskly to near targets (light-near dissociation). But both O’Brian and Jefferts point out that the technological applications of today’s atomic clocks weren’t apparent when they were first invented. What will we do once we reach the ability to break down time into super-tiny, hyper-accurate units? Nobody knows. There is currently a large international push to find a method of even better timekeeping, though exactly which one will prevail is yet to be seen. If engineers want to get more accurate, they will have to find some other natural process that can be used to measure time and it “will require a whole bunch of people agreeing for that to happen,” said Jefferts. In 1967, scientists got together and defined one second as equivalent to the time it takes a cesium atom to move 9,192,631,770 times between two particular energy levels. “In the not to distant future, we will end up redefining the second,” said Steve Jefferts, who led the NIST project to develop the new atomic clock. It's important then that the ultimate reference standard has much better performance than the real world technologies. Real world clocks must operate under strained conditions such as temperature swings, significant vibration, or changing magnetic fields that degrade and hamper their accuracy. Your smartphone doesn’t display the time to the sixteenth decimal place, but it still relies on the frequency standards coming from NIST's clocks, which make their measurements while living in a tightly controlled lab environment. GPS, in turn, is used for synchronizing digital networks such as cell phones and the NTP servers that provide the backbone of the internet. These satellites rely on high precision coming from atomic clocks at the U.S. GPS, for instance, needs accuracy of about a billionth of a second in order to keep you from getting lost. ![]() Precise timekeeping underpins much of our modern world.
